Speaker Bio
Across Canada, non-profits hold land that could support urgently needed affordable housing, yet many face financial, technical and organizational barriers at the earliest stages of development. Shared Ground is an applied research initiative led by 5468796 Architecture that helps social purpose organizations unlock housing opportunities on the land and buildings they already own. Supported in part by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada’s Research and Knowledge Initiative, the initiative provides no-cost feasibility-phase support including project visioning, site assessment, partnership development and funding alignment. Through this work, mission-driven organizations have been able to move from early ideas toward viable housing initiatives. This presentation will introduce the Shared Ground model, share lessons learned through early projects, and highlight a toolkit designed to support replication. Participants will gain insight into how social purpose infrastructure can act as a catalyst for affordable housing, and how feasibility-phase support can help organizations with limited development experience advance projects toward implementation.
